A question to the ex-JW's...
by losthobbit ini'm curious about what made you realize that your ex-religion was not "true"?.
i've had discussions with many religious people, and they're always trying to protect their beliefs, rather than allowing anything i say challenge what they believe.
was there ever something someone said to you, or something you read that maybe made you doubt your beliefs for the first time, or had a similar effect?.

I'm still in technically, but my mind & heart are far, far away.
But to answer your question, what made me realize that it's a joke is when I started to see that when you get a glimpse at what goes on at a administrative level (elders, MS's, departments, etc.) you see that in reality it is no different than any other man-made institution. Maybe Russell had good intentions, maybe not. But either way, like any human organization, once it gets to big, it turns into the very thing that it was against when it started. I realized that this is why Jesus told his disciples to be "no part of the world". He was pointing out the danger of human institutions, especially those who profess to channel God's will. I'm not saying that other religions are any better or worse than JW (although Christmas sure looks fun) I'm just saying that when you really look at it logically and unbiasedly, it's the same ol' formula:
1st Man tells 2nd Man that God speaks through him only, 2nd man believes it and gives first man all his money and allegiance.

Crap on a playing card! I hit the wrong button!
Anywho, I was wondering how many people here, regardless of age, at some point in their JW "career" did what is so often referred to as "making the Truth your own."
I've been thinking about this lately, and about my own "dedication". I can honestly say that I never personally dedicated myself to God, I only got baptized because of pressure from my family and being ignorant to the way that life actually works. I avoided doing bad things, not out of some feeling that I'm "sinning" but more out of a fear of getting in trouble. I only ever did all the crazy JW appointed stuff because I thought that it would make my family respect me (didn't work). So even when I was being a die-hard JW, I think deep down I never really accepted or believed in JW doctrine and practices. I just did it because that's what I was taught to do. Obey.
Anybody else dig what I'm saying?

So I finished reading the Origin of Species last night.....
by Mr. Falcon in...oh my.. i am not trying to start a creation vs. evolution debate, but something else really did stand out in my mind upon reading this "infamous" book.
and that is that the theory of evolution is a very complex and at times, logically interesting theory.
it makes valid points as well as asking fair and legitimate questions of the theory of creation.

Mr. Falcon
Are you proposing we obtain the best information available for both perpsectives, try to suppress our biases, and only then decide where we stand?
Cheez, you won't hear that kind of reasoning in a Kingdom Hall!!!

So if God used Evolution to create life what is the problem with that!!!
This was the sorta the tone I got from Origin of the Species. Darwin called the theologian naturalists out for being so stubborn and close minded while at the same time carefully wording his book to allow for the possibility of a Creator. So if you believed in a Creator or not, it was all cool to Darwin, he just didn't think you should be close-minded.

Bethel Heavy...How is this determined?
by LostGeneration ini've read the term "bethel heavy" here and heard it once and a while when i was a jw.
as someone who has never even visited bethel, i was wondering if a few of you can fill me in on the details.. i know of course this is an unofficial title, but what is the main factor in reaching this status?
is it mainly given to those who head certain departments, or even work high up in certain departments?

that image of Knorr's oath of allegience to the US is too small to see. Does anyone have a better picture of that? What does it say exactly?
The frightening thing is that if you were to even mention this incident at all, you would be immediately branded a heretic.

Assembly/Convention Rules
by IMHO injust been reading the resurrected topic "remember when assemblies were fun".. bought back some good memories particularly regarding the 'holiday camps'.. i was going to add this but decided it warranted it's own topic.. the 'good times' have been replaced by incessant rules.
here is a selection from the last circuit assembly i attended.
please feel free to add to the list.. .

FirstLastName, this was always a grey area at our conventions. I've seen attendants harrass ANYONE who dared enter the parking area during the session. And I've seen attendants (myself included) that minded our own business. You want to sit in your car? Whatever.
I don't see what the big deal is. Your car seat is probably 1,000,000 times more comfortable than a stadium seat which is designed to only be sat in for 2-3 hours MAX. Plus they transmit on FM, so in theory if you're lucky you could score a comfortable hotel across the street, lay in bed and listen (if you really wanted to waste more time).
